Peer tutors must be fully hired and onboarded before the start of the term in which they will be tutoring. To ensure that the hiring process is completed in time, peer tutor request forms must be submitted a minimum of six weeks prior to the start of the following term.
The steps for hiring a subject-specific peer tutor through the Writing Centre are as follows:
- Associate Dean identifies the need for peer-tutor support for a particular subject and/or class. Faculty members must discuss and get approval from their AD to request peer tutor support through the Writing Centre.
- Associate Dean and/or faculty member fills out and submits the Peer Tutor Request Form and then sends an email to rachel.macivor@unfc.ca to set up a meeting to discuss the peer tutor role.
- Writing Centre develops a job description for the tutoring position (if one does not already exist), confirms the description with the AD/faculty member, and sends the description to HR for posting.
- Associate Dean and/or faculty member recommends 1-3 students for the peer tutor role.
- Students apply for the position through the HR job posting by submitting their resume/CV for consideration.
- Collaborative, informal interview(s) is/are set up by HR with AD/faculty member(s) and the Writing Centre to choose a student for the role.
- Student is selected and offered the position.
- Students must work a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week up to a maximum of 24 hours per week. We start student peer tutors at 3 hours of work per week. If the need for additional hours can be evidenced through consistent student consultations during tutoring hours over the course of two weeks or more, we can then discuss increasing the student’s weekly hours.
- Writing Centre works with the student to set up their schedule and train the student on booking software and tutoring practices.
- Peer tutors are managed by the Writing Centre with periodic consultation required from AD/faculty members regarding content, program or subject tutoring needs, and peer tutor requirements.
- Peer tutors are hired/reinstated on a term-by-term basis based on program needs (as identified by AD/faculty members).
